Packing is one of the most stressful and time-consuming aspects of moving home. Make the difference the next time you require a removal company and get rid of waste like this. 

Declutter everywhere and anywhere

Before you start packing, consider how to make this process a little easier. One way to achieve this is to remove any unwanted items and say goodbye to clutter that you have been storing for no reason. There are always items you don’t use that often or things you might have two of, so what’s the point in keeping them?  Now is the ideal time to trim back and reduce unwanted waste. Not only will this save space in packaging boxes, it’ll reduce the amount of time you have to spend on the packing process, and this should make you less stressed.   

Systematically go through all areas of the home on a room-by-room basis. If you spend more than a few seconds deliberating whether you want to keep something, you can afford to get rid of it.

Reducing clutter in the kitchen

Kitchens are a hot spot for clutter. Pull open cupboard doors and the sheer scale of their contents can be quite discouraging. Take heart, though. If you can force yourself to be a little brutal you can say goodbye to junk for good. 

  • Get rid of unwanted cups and mugs. Virtually every household kitchen has a few random mugs stuck at the back of cupboards. Will you ever use them? No you won’t!
  • Be brutal with non-matching plates and dishes. They take up too much space and it’s pretty pointless transporting them to your new house. Ditch those miss-matching dishes.
  • Bin old electrical appliances. Search for any that are lying about in cupboards and haven’t been used for ages.
  • Go through detergent, washing powder and household cleaner cupboards. Check the products inside and throw away anything that you simply don’t use.
  • Check the contents of food cupboards. Look at the use-by dates on tins, spices and sauces. Bet you find quite a few that are out of date.
  • Run through the produce in your fridge and freezer. Try to use these items up way before the day of the move.
  • Throw away anything that’s unused and unloved. If you find vases, jugs, or old food containers that you haven’t used for years, now’s the time to part company with them.

Cut back on bedroom clutter

Wardrobes, chest of drawers and under bed storage areas hide all manner of sins. A house move gives you the perfect opportunity to downsize in these areas. Pull open doors, drag drawers out and be ruthless as you blitz the bedroom this way. 

  • Run through the contents of your wardrobe. Only you will know if you have worn the garments recently and are likely to wear them again. If you can’t remember the last time you wore something, it has to go, it’s as simple as that.
  • Clean out drawer clutter. You’ll be amazed at just how many weird and wonderful items find their way into bedroom drawers, and how much stuff you really don’t need.
  • How many sins is your bed hiding? Hoarding items in or under the base might keep them out of sight but this won’t do you any favours when it’s time to move. Old shoes, files, folders and boxes of miscellaneous items are simply wasting space. Get rid of anything you don’t need.
  • Use old sheets and blankets as padding during the move. They provide a protective layer for furniture and help to reduce the cost of packaging supplies.

Loot the loft

Attic spaces are always a surprise when you start packing for a house move. You forget exactly how much stuff you have stored in the attic over the years, look through the loft and you unearth family treasures and generally find a large amount of junk that you can pretty much do without. A house move presents you with the opportunity to lose items you are keeping in the loft and say goodbye to them for good.  

  • Can you live without it? This is the biggest question you have to ask yourself when clearing out the loft. It’s easy for sentiment to take over when you climb the loft ladder but try to remain focused on the task.
  • Can you sell it? Are there any valuable items, antiques, bric-a-brac or belongings in the loft that have some kind of resale value and could help towards the cost of moving? Decide what is actually junk and what has some kind of forward value, you could make a bit of money on the side.
  • Can you move it with ease? Take extra care moving items out of the loft. Climbing up and down loft ladders carrying awkward items can be rather tricky, it’s physically demanding, and there’s a genuine risk of injury. 
  • Don’t dither. If you spot something and have to think whether you want to keep it or not, do you really need this in your life?

De-Junking the garage

Garages and sheds are a haven for hardly used items, so physically get rid of anything you really don’t need. Let’s face it, you’re not exactly going to be in love with any of the items you keep inside your garage, so be brutal with the clutter. 

  • Host a garage sale. One quick way to get rid of clutter from your garage, shed or outbuilding is to run a garage sale from your driveway. Your junk could be somebody else’s treasure and by selling it this saves you having to dispose of items elsewhere. Set up a stall and see how much money you make.
  • Establish what is useable and what’s not.  Boxes of rusty old screws and unused tools shouldn’t be placed on the removals van.  As part of a garage clear out, you can afford to be choosy about what you take with you and what you leave behind, only pack the things you know you will definitely use at your new home.
  • Think about the impracticalities.  Do you really want to be transporting part-used tins of paints, white spirits, motor oils and other fluids that could spill and cause damage during the move? Motor oil can be taken to council refuse sites, whilst paint can be recycled through community sites such as       
  • Don’t be afraid to make tough decisions. If you haven’t used that cross trainer for years, the bike hung on the garage wall is starting to go rusty, and you have a small collection of lawn mowers that haven’t seen daylight for decades, get tough and admit, the likelihood is, you’re not going to use them when you move either. 

Decluttering the home prior to house removal is a sensible precaution that should decrease the number of objects you have to lift and shift on removals day.
